Rock Anchoring in Indian Arm
This is one of those jobs that shows the mobility of our company and just how adaptable our crews are to take on tough remote access jobs like this. I’m very proud of our guys for sticking with it on these challenging days and getting the job done.

Here is a job the Rock Buster’s team did this spring. We did a rock anchoring job well up into Indian Arm for a new Private Residence ramp and dock. The anchors had to be drilled 10’ into the rock and epoxied in with special rock anchoring grout. The anchors were 1” x 12’ long and are used to secure the ramp and dock to the bank and prevent them from moving during storms and tidal changes etc.

We started off the day at the Rocky Point Boat launch where we met the barge and crane and loaded up our gear and air compressor onto the barge. We then traveled 1.5 hours up the Indian Arm to the site.

It is difficult to drill a 10’ deep hole in the rock at the best of times. You’re always fighting the drill getting stuck and having to retrieve the bit out of the hole. Now add the fact that these all had to be drilled sideways from the face into the bank. It took 3 guys holding the drill and pushing for hours to accomplish getting all 4 holes done in the same day.

In order to drill a 10’ deep hole using a hand-held rock drill, we had to start off by drilling a 3’ hole that was 2” in diameter and then add a coupler to our drill steel to take it down to 7’ with switching the but down in size to a 1.75” bit. Then for the final 3’ switching the bit down once again to a 1.5” bit.

This was a success and our crew managed to get all 4 holes drilled, the anchors installed and grouted all in the same day.
