What to Do When You Encounter a Boulder While Excavating or Trenching

by | Dec 30, 2024 | Blog | 0 comments

So you’re on an excavation trenching project and you’ve suddenly encountered a large rock or boulder in the middle of your dig. Excavation and trenching projects often come with unexpected challenges, and one of the most common obstacles is encountering a boulder blocking your path. While this can seem like a major roadblock, the right approach and tools can turn a potential delay into a quick resolution. Here’s a step-by-step guide to deal with boulders during excavation or trenching, drawing from our recent projects at Rock Busters.

Step 1: Assess the Boulder

Before jumping to action right away, take a moment to evaluate the situation. Key factors to consider include:

  • Size and Dimensions: How large is the boulder?
  • Material Composition: Is it solid granite, limestone, or another type of rock?
  • Location: How deeply embedded is it, and how close is it to the trench walls?

In our recent Coquitlam project with Aecon Utilities Inc., we encountered a massive 1.5m x 1.5m x 2m boulder. Its size and placement required a strategic approach to avoid damaging the trench. See more about how we effectively handled this boulder here.

Step 2: Choose the Right Tools

The size and material of the boulder will determine the tools needed. At Rock Busters, we use a range of specialized equipment to handle any rock-breaking challenge effectively:

  1. Pneumatic Splitter: Ideal for large, solid boulders in tight spaces. In Coquitlam, we used this tool to break the boulder into manageable pieces quickly and efficiently.
  2. Expanding Grout: For cases where precision is key, drilling holes into the rock and applying expanding grout can safely break it apart without vibrations or explosions. This method was crucial in our Lynn Valley project, where we removed 150 boulders to prepare for residential development.
  3. Hydraulic Breaker: When extra force is required, this tool can help break through stubborn rock quickly.

Step 3: Execute the Removal

After selecting the right tools, follow these steps to remove the boulder:

  1. Mark the Boulder and Drill: Identify strategic points for drilling holes in the boulder. For example, on Spuraway Avenue, our team drilled multiple holes to ensure the pneumatic splitter could work effectively.
  2. Apply Pressure: Use the splitter or grout to break the rock into smaller, manageable pieces.
  3. Clear and Remove Debris: Once the boulder is in pieces, use an excavator or manual labor to clear the trench path.

Step 4: Ensure Safety

Safety should always be a number one priority during rock removal. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and ensure that the work area is secure. Using non-explosive methods, like expanding grout, will minimize risks and environmental impact, making it an excellent choice for residential or urban areas.

Step 5: Resume Work

With the boulder out of the way, you can return to your excavation or trenching project with minimal downtime. Our efficient methods in Coquitlam ensured the project stayed on schedule, much to the client’s satisfaction.

Not all boulder-removal situations can be handled in-house. If you lack the right tools or expertise, calling in specialists like Rock Busters can save you time, money, and stress.
