Phase 1: Creating the Essential Relief Pocket For expansive grout to be effective, the material needs an open face or room to expand. Trenching without a relief point will often fail because the internal pressure has nowhere to direct the force.

1. Remove The Toe: Always begin by creating a relief at the start of your trench. This is done by drilling and breaking out the bottom edge, known as the toe.
2. The V-Shape Cut: Drill a V-shape pattern at the leading edge of the trench.
3. Establish a Pocket: Apply grout to the V-cut, wait for the break, and remove the rubble. Then, drill down to the bottom of your sub-drill depth, apply more grout, and clear the rubble to create a deep starting pocket.

Phase 2: High-Volume Trenching Execution Once your relief pocket is established, you can begin the continuous extraction of the trench line.

• Drilling: Drill your production holes at a 15 to 17 degree angle pointing down toward your sub-drill depth.

• Temperature Selection: Ensure you choose the correct grout type based on the core temperature of the rock, not just the air temperature.
• The Morning Pour: The best strategy is to drill your holes the day before and pour the grout mixture first thing in the morning.
• Consistency is Key: Use an electrical mixer with a paddle to achieve a smooth, slurry-like liquid. Add exactly 1.5 liters of water per one bag of grout.
• Time to Wait: While small cracks may appear in as early as 6 hours, waiting 12 to 48 hours results in more extensive and wider cracking.
