Carving Space for Progress: Bedrock Breaking in Belcarra
Building on the coastal terrain of Belcarra Bay Road comes with undeniable views—and undeniable rock. When a local residential build required bedrock removal to make room for a new garage, the Rockbusters team was brought in to handle the heavy breaking in a tight, neighborhood-bound setting.
Working on residential properties demands precision. High-impact blasting or heavy hammer vibrations can cause structural stress to neighboring foundations, underground utilities, and nearby homes. Our low-vibration approach allowed us to carve out the site safely without causing a disruption.
Project Breakdown
- Location: Belcarra Bay Road, Belcarra, BC
- Scope: Controlled bedrock breaking and excavation for a residential garage foundation
- Timeline: Completed in 15 days
- Crew: 3-man crew
- Equipment & Technique: Hydraulic rock drills, non-explosive rock splitters, and expansive grout

The Challenge & Solution
The site presented a classic West Coast challenge: dense, solid bedrock right where a garage needed to go, bordered by residential structures and steep coastal topography.
To break down the rock safely, our 3-man crew implemented a non-explosive rock demolition method:
- Pattern Drilling: Using hydraulic rock drills, the team pattern-drilled the targeted bedrock layout to control fracture lines exactly where needed.
- Controlled Splitting: Hydraulic rock splitters and high-expansion grout were used to exert thousands of tons of outward pressure, quietly splitting the granite without shockwaves or flying debris.
- Excavation & Prep: The shattered rock was systematically removed, clearing a clean, level footprint ready for concrete pouring.
Over the course of 15 days, our crew successfully cleared the site, giving the builder a solid, level surface to start framing the garage. Another clean, safe rock breaking project completed by Rockbusters!
